Madrona Gallery is pleased to present Cape Dorset: Past and Present. A collection of prints and drawings  based out of the Kinngait Studio in Cape Dorset.

OCTOBER 19 - NOVEMBER 2 2013                   

Corrinne Wolcoski is a nationally recognized artist based in Vancouver.
 
Her latest collection focuses on many trips by water and land along the coastline of Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound. Columns of Light' refers to one of Wolcoski's main motivations for painting this series. 

OCTOBER 18 2013                  

This is the first year that Madrona Gallery has been asked to take part in the print collection. We are honored to be a part of such a historically important body of work. This year there are 34 prints by 11 artists. This includes 7 final works by the iconic Kenojuak Ashevak. Her passing earlier in 2013 marked the end of an era for Inuit art. She was the most famous and last remaining member of the original group of artists that worked with James Houston to establish the Co-op and the international reputation of the print collection.

SEPTEMBER 12 - 26 2013

Luke Ramsey is a Pender Island based artist that is internationally recognized for his intricate drawing style. Over the last decade he has worked on a wide spectrum of projects that have helped him achieve a loyal base of collectors always eager to see what is next.

AUGUST 23 - 30 2013.                  

Featuring Work by Meghan Hildebrand, Luke Ramsey, Ryan Thompson & Caitlin McDonagh, Cameron Kidd, Theresa Slater and Morgana Wallace. This collection of artists represents a major part of the creative voice that drives contemporary arts in this region. Each artist's work pushes forward a unique aesthetic that is directly informed by experiences here in our own backyard. Through ink, paint, collage and mixed media we believe these artists produce work you need to see.

JUNE 8 - 22 2013                  

Over the last 40 years Nicholas Bott has explored western Canada painting the Yukon, British Columbia and Alberta. This exhibition of new work focuses on Pacific Rim National Park, Gulf islands and Coastal mountains. Bott has gained international recognition and a worldwide base of collectors through his use of a bold pallet and a strong sense of structure given to the features in his powerful landscape paintings.

MAY 4 -28                               

This collection of new paintings by nationally celebrated artist Meghan Hildebrand explores the idea of, what if all the wonderful ideas that people had to make the world a better place came together? In her iconic "Story Maps" she pieces together imagination and reality, offering the viewer suggestions of narrative to connect as they please. In this series Hildebrand is emphasizing the action of painting to communicate emotion and energy. Enthusiastic brushstrokes and vibrant colours build on the canvas to celebrate new beginnings, growth out of destruction and various other themes.

APRIL 13 - 28                   

Morley Myers sculpture is a intricate blend of cross cultural influences.His work in stone and Various metals are explorations of the essential elements in human form. Over the last two decades he has developed an international following for his work which has lead to exhibitions throughout North America.

Patricia tirelessly explores the connection of connecting human features to inhuman objects. This looks to the emotional element in how people connect and express or repress emotions only to see them displaced in unrelated objects.

MARCH 9 - 23                  

Nancy Ruhl paints the aspects of neighborhoods that are often overlooked, elevating the everyday to the extraordinary and bringing greater awareness to the unique elements of our community. By focusing on post-war bungalows and turn of the century Arts and Crafts homes Ruhl helps tell the story of our city one house at a time

FEB. 8 - FEB. 22

Over the last few years leading artists from Cape Dorset have teamed up with prominent artists in the south to create work that challenges historic notions of Inuit art. This collaboration transcended language difficulties and proved that art is a language of its own.

JAN. 5 - JAN.27

This exhibition looks at the influence of Vancouver island and the Gulf Islands have on a wide variety of artists from across the country. Artists from our stable have all found influence from our unique environment.

NOVEMBER 16-28

Qavavau Manumie is a well established artist based in Cape Dorset Nunavut. His work can be found in collections around the world including the National gallery of Canada, Museum of Civilization and The McMichael Collection of Canadian Art. His signature style of adding a sense of whimsy and humor to Inuit narratives has separated his work from many other inuit artists. Qavavau is also a master printmaker. He is involved in carving and inking the stone tablets for famous annual collection of prints that is released each year. His reputation has taken him around the globe to give demonstration and teach others the art that he has spent almost four decades perfecting.

OCTOBER 20 - NOVEMBER 3

We are honored to be able to host this exhibition and sale of his work that covers the entire span of Graham Forsythe's career. This will include works from many different series including his iconic confetti paintings which are collected internationally.

OCTOBER 6-19

This collection is inspired by recent sailing trips through the west coast of British Colombia. Areas of Desolation Sound and Haida Gwaii have provided endless inspiration. Further exploration into abstraction is a major force in this show. Rick is minimizing form in many of the works to raise the impact of colour and bring awareness to different techniques in the application of paint.

SEPTEMBER 15 - 29

Doruyter’s paintings are complex works that utilize texture to enhance the sense of depth in the scene. From a distance these pieces have a sense of photorealism, however upon closer observation they can be quite painterly. Over the last decade this technique has garnered him recognition of various awards and collectors around the globe.

JULY 8 - AUGUST 31

This rotating group exhibition features new works from gallery artists. This exhibition presents a broad range of work from across the country. The unifying element is the idea of summer.

This years show will also feature a weekly feature of drawings from some of the leading figures in contemporary Inuit art such as Shuvinai Ashoona, Itee Pootoogook, Tim Pitseolak, Ningeokuluk Teevee, Najailia Quvianaqtuliaq and Qavavau Mannumie.

JUNE 30 - JULY 7

Madrona Gallery has partnered with the Victoria Pride Society for this open juried show. This exhibition features works from both Well established artists such as Meghan Hildebrand and Phillis Serota as well as a number of local emerging artists. The theme of PROUD is something that is interpreted by each artist. The result is a very diverse and personal collection of meaningful works.

JUNE 2 - 16

Over the last three decades, iconic Canadian artist, Nicholas Bott has garnered international recognition and a worldwide base of collectors with his use of a bold pallet and his expressive approach to capturing the beauty of BC. Bott started his career in Smithers painting northern BC landscapes. Now he is based near Vancouver and he has diversified his subject matter to the many remote regions he has explored. This new collection he shifts his focus to BC’s rugged coastal region as well as British Colombia's interior mountains.

MAY 12 - 26

This collection of work is inspired by Wendy Wacko accompanying Olympic rower Adam Kreek and the crew of OAR North West on part of their circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in April 2012.Passing through Johnstone Strait, gliding along the sea allowed the artist a unique perspective of documenting the region.“This experience has changed the way I see the world and other people. From a creative point of view, I learned a lot about tone and subtle texture that had until now eluded me.”

APRIL 7 - 21

These new works are a a step, a leap and jump beyond any work we have seen in the past from Meghan Hildebrand. Her Iconic style and subject matter are ever present, however in this collection Meghan gives a beautiful sense of space to each element in her compositions.Subject mater is reduced to the essential elements creating some of the most powerful paintings we have ever seen from this artist.Another departure is that this collection is entirely Oil and Acrylic on Canvas. This move away from mixed media on board creates a free and playful approach to composition. Broad washes of colour saturate each canvas giving a foundation to build her imaginary landscapes.

MARCH 3 - 17

Luke Ramsey is recognized internationally for his art and design work. This Pender Island artist has been featured in exhibitions From L.A. to Berlin. It is a great honor to be able to present this artists work in his home town. Luke describes his work as "Organized chaos- a play with paradoxical themes. The content is influenced by a beautifully strange cosmos of organisms and comedy. The approach needs to feel fluid and not forced.

FEBRUARY 11 - 25

This exhibition represents two decades of work from Madeleine Wood. Her career has been based in Montreal, Vancouver and now Vancouver Island. Over the last 20 years Wood has produced a number of important bodies of work, which are featured in this exhibition, that have ranged in subject matter from figurative to still-life. The common element that weaves together all of Wood's paintings is the compositional element of taking a segment of the whole. This lures the viewer in, raising questions of context and allowing the viewer to speculate on the story within each piece. This approach heightens design elements placing a pominance on lines and angles created. Its effect is to abstract the subject matter and allow your eye to move freely throughout the work.

From Graham Forsythe's painterly handling of Goldstream provincial park to Corrinne Wolcoski's delecatly rendered seascapes the works selected for this exhibition capture the spirit of living in the Pacific North-West and express the many ways it inspires us

NOVEMBER 5 - 19

New Work by Shuvinai Ashoona, Qavavau Manumie,Tim Pitsiulak, Itee Pootoogook, Ningeokuluk Teevee and Jutai Toonoo

This powerful collection brings together six artists that make up the voice of contemporary art in Cape Dorset. These internationally recognized artists create works that inspire dialogue and re-contextualize expectations of the northern narrative.

OCTOBER 1 - 15

You are invited to Rick Bond’s first solo exhibition with Madrona Gallery. Over the last three decades this well established artist has developed an iconic signature style. Bond’s expressive application of paint and bold use of colour combine for intricate and well balanced compositions. This show will feature his three most recognized bodies of work: West coast landscapes, streetscapes and musicians.Bond's work is found in galleries throughout Canada and in private collections around the world.

AUGUST 26- SEPTEMBER 8

Madrona Gallery is pleased to present this exhibition of recent works from two exciting Victoria Artists. Crescendo is based on the musical imagery of each of these artists. Frances Baskerville's work captures intimate moments in dance; the rise and fall of a beat or the emotion felt in a tango. Jeanne Campbell, uses music to inspire he abstract compositions. This collection was created in collaboration and with intent from both artists. There is a sense of play achieved through the counter point between the figurative and abstract heightened through the visual rhythm of brushstrokes and colour.
