Inuit Masterworks

June 22 - July 6

Opening Reception June 22

Madrona Gallery is proud to present Inuit Masterworks, an exhibition featuring drawings, carvings, and prints by leading Inuit artists from the Robertson Collection. Highlighted are works by, Pauta Saila, John TikTak, Pitaloosie Saila, Kenojuak Ashevak, and many more.

The Robertson Collection:

This collection was started by John and Mary Robertson in the 1950’s. They were involved in the early efforts in promoting Inuit art alongside James Houston, George Swinton and other pioneers that helped establish a market for Inuit art. Through their keen eye and rare, early access to masterpieces by top artists they were able to develop a personal collection of their favorite carvings, drawings and prints. This collection was further developed by their son John and his wife Clara. They added select works from 1970 onwards. They continued the family’s legacy of promoting Inuit art through developing exhibitions of this collection in Asia. Through their efforts, Inuit carvings were introduced to regions of the world which had never seen this type of art before.

In addition to the exhibitions in Asia, a number of works were also selected for the major exhibition “Sculpture/Inuit”, which toured important museums around the globe including The Pushkin Fine Arts Museum, Moscow; British Museum, London; The Hermitage, St. Petersburg; National Museum, Copenhagen; Le Grand Palais, Paris; and others. It is a rare opportunity to access such a well exhibited and in-depth collection. Madrona Gallery is honoured to be able to offer these works for sale, many of which are on the market for the first time.
