Joe Norris
/Joe Norris (1925-1996)
Joe Norris' paintings are among the most celebrated examples of folk art in Canada. Norris devoted his life to painting after a heart attack in his 40's made him unable to work as a fisherman. He started by selling his works locally in and around Halifax. Quickly his work was singled out by collectors and curators for its distinct quality. Over his short career as an artist, his art was included in exhibitions across the country, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, National Gallery and Museum of Man. In 2000, a major retrospective of his work was organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia which toured the country from coast to coast.
